"Eyes peek out at me from all dark corners, robes swish across quiet, empty streets. Slowly, as we get nearer to the House of Darkness, the wind starts howling and dark storm clouds hover over buildings." - Vampires Aren't Real by Hyonia Kottas, age 12
This anthology is the product of a collaboration between 826 Valencia and Buena Vista Horace Mann, a bilingual K-8 school in San Francisco's Mission District. Throughout the school year, tutors, interns, and staff worked with groups of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders as they developed their skills as writers. These middle school students were supported across a range of subjects and projects, including imagining what like might have ben like in medieval times, writing personal narratives, taking a stance in persuasive essays, and developing suspense in scary stories. This anthology includes excerpts from these reflections, journal entries, essays, and Scarratives.
826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.
